Safety tips?

One of the things we have to be careful of is that there are many people on the internet who take great pleasure in slamming destinations for a variety of reasons. Some of these people will take a news item on crime and manipulate it to cause more harm than good. We want this forum to be a helpful place to people planning on having a holiday on Antigua. Read here to find out about things that will help to make your holiday safer as well as to find out about news items related to crime in Antigua.

Safety tips?

We may rent a car when we visit next month. From multiple visits to St. Martin, we know where to avoid after dark, that cars parked anywhere should always be left with nothing of value inside, etc.

As we visit Antigua, are there any areas to avoid? If we go to a beach and park, do we leave the car open or should it be locked? Any general tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

It's pretty much the same as most places these days, just use common sense. Lock the car, don't leave valuables visible, don't flash your bling, and avoid run down poorly lit urban areas at night unless you're with a local. I'd avoid wearing brief beachwear anywhere but the beach, but then you wouldn't want to see me in it even on a beach. We've been visiting Antigua regularly for years with no problems.

Coming up to our 9th visit to Antigua in a few days time. We have hired a car in the past and have had absolutely no problem at all. Treat the residents with respect and you will get the respect back. They enjoy their rum, so if you are in a bar in St John's having a chat with one of the locals buy them a drink, what harm can it do....
The people that can cause the problems are sometimes the visitors, so think about what you are doing, dont show your wealth, and just remember 'DONT WORRY, BE HAPPY' just be sensible and you will enjoy your stay on this beautiful island .
