Used Cars

Postby Nat » Thu Jul 17, 2008 6:09 pm

Hi, I'm moving on the Island in September and will need to buy a used Jeep.
Does anybody have any tips on this? Or know where to start looking at?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Just a few observations about buying a used car. I went through this experience myself not very long ago. There are lots of good used jeep style cars available, at a price. If you have deep pockets, finding a good reliable late model will not be difficult. The main dealers almost always have a stock of imported late models to chose from.

The problems really start when your budget will not tolerate the abuse that buying a relatively new (5/6 years or less) car will cause. Older models, some well maintained and relatively low mileage, do come available but are in great demand, can be rare and can be a mine field. If you are not very confident in your ability to thoroughly inspect a prospective auto, you would be well advised to hire a competent mechanic to check the car out. If you get to that point, I'm sure that members of this board will recommend someone to help.

The bodgers, who repair cars with string and wire, and little knowledge, are as prevalent here as they are anywhere.

Various notice boards on the island, as well as the Observer newspaper, often carry ads for cars for sale, but the good ones, honestly priced, tend to go quickly.

Cheers Harvey,

I got in touch with Rufus and he might have something for me.. The budget will go along with value for money, and since I am not fussy on model, age and color, I hope it will play to my advantage.

I had loads of help from this forum so far, for what I am doing and to prepare my move to Antigua, to the extend that I probably will organize a dinner party just for Antiguaforum, so people will meet personally, unless you all know each other already ;)

As you are going to be in the EH area have you made contact with Gilly of Premier Motors at the goat farm on the road from Cobbs Cross to St James Club. He will be able to get you a used Land Landrover. Great fun, only for those who want a certain style! Good for if the bad weather hits, very rugged. PM me if you want his contact email
